Nerve conduction studies and EMG

Testing for nerve and muscle conditions at our Box Hill clinic. Coming soon.

Coming soon. We are setting up nerve conduction studies and EMG at Box Hill, with a neurologist who specialises in these tests joining the team in the coming months. Referrals can be sent now and will be booked as soon as the service opens.

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) measure how well nerves and muscles are working. They are the main tests for diagnosing problems in the peripheral nerves and muscles.

What the tests are for

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome and other trapped nerves, such as ulnar neuropathy at the elbow
  • Peripheral neuropathy, including diabetic neuropathy
  • Pinched nerves in the neck or back (radiculopathy)
  • Muscle weakness and muscle diseases
  • Conditions affecting the nerve-muscle junction, such as myasthenia gravis
  • Motor neurone disease, where it needs to be excluded

What happens during the test

For nerve conduction studies, small electrodes are placed on the skin and a brief electrical pulse is applied to a nerve; the response is recorded further along the nerve. The pulses feel like a tap or a tingle. For EMG, a fine needle electrode is placed into a muscle to record its electrical activity at rest and when you tense it. The test takes 30 to 60 minutes and you can drive home afterwards.

Before you come

  • Keep your hands and feet warm on the way in; cold limbs slow nerve signals
  • Do not apply moisturiser to your arms or legs on the day
  • Take your usual medications, but tell us if you take a blood thinner
  • Bring your referral and any previous nerve test results

Referrals

GPs and specialists can refer directly for nerve conduction studies and EMG. Medicare rebates apply with a valid referral.
