Assessment and treatment of migraine and other headache disorders by our neurologists, in Melbourne and by telehealth.
Headache is one of the most common reasons people see a neurologist. Most headaches are not dangerous, but frequent or severe headaches can take over work, family and sleep, and they are treatable.
Seek urgent care (call 000 or go to an emergency department) for a sudden, severe headache that peaks within seconds to minutes, or a headache with fever and neck stiffness, weakness, confusion, loss of vision or a seizure.
Your neurologist will take a detailed history of your headaches, review what you have already tried and examine you. Most headache disorders are diagnosed from the history. Scans or other tests are arranged only when they are needed. You will leave with a plan covering treatment for attacks, prevention where appropriate, and the triggers and habits worth changing.
A headache diary for the few weeks before your appointment is very helpful. Note the days you had a headache, how bad it was and what you took.
Headache and migraine are seen by our neurologists with a special interest in headache disorders, alongside general neurology and multiple sclerosis.
