Prompt assessment after a first or suspected seizure. We endeavour to see first seizure referrals within 1–2 weeks.
A first seizure is frightening, and the wait for answers can be the hardest part. Our First Seizure Clinic exists so that people are assessed quickly, investigated properly and given clear advice.
In an emergency call 000. Call an ambulance if a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, if a second seizure follows quickly, if the person does not wake up afterwards, or if they are injured, pregnant or were in water.
Not every blackout or collapse is a seizure. Fainting, heart rhythm problems, migraine, sleep disorders and functional seizures can all look similar. Part of our job is working out what the event was, because the right treatment depends on the right diagnosis. Where events keep happening and the cause is unclear, home video-EEG can record them as they occur.
Driving rules after a seizure apply across Australia. Do not drive until you have spoken with your doctor. Your neurologist will explain the rules that apply to you and can provide the required medical reports.
The clinic is run by our team of neurologists, all of whom have fellowship training in epilepsy. Appointments are available at Box Hill and by telehealth anywhere in Australia.
