Assessment, diagnosis and ongoing care for multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions of the nervous system.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition in which the immune system attacks the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Early diagnosis and treatment matter, and treatment options have improved greatly.
These symptoms have many possible causes, and most people who have them do not have MS. A neurologist can work out what is going on.
Diagnosis is based on your history and examination together with MRI of the brain and spinal cord. Blood tests help exclude other conditions, and a lumbar puncture is sometimes recommended. Your neurologist will explain the results and what they mean for you.
Treatment is tailored to the person. It may include a disease-modifying therapy to reduce relapses and new MRI activity, treatment of symptoms, and regular clinical and MRI review. Decisions take into account your type of MS, your other health needs and your plans, including pregnancy.
We also see people with other suspected autoimmune conditions of the nervous system. Please ask your doctor to include relevant test results with the referral.
Multiple sclerosis and neuroimmunology are seen by our neurologists with fellowship training in multiple sclerosis. They also see patients with headache and migraine.
